What is SEO?
SEO or Search Engine Optimisation is the technique used to increase the amount of natural visitors to a website by obtaining a high rank in the search results of a search engine (like Google, Bing, etc.) Simply put, it is how people search for things on the internet and setting up your website so that it appears high in the search results.
SEO is important as users tend not to want to search through lots of pages of search results to find what they are looking for. When they do find what they are looking for, that’s normally the end of the search, so it doesn’t matter that you were only a few listings after the one they clicked, your site will not get the visitors.

10 Top SEO tips for 2015
1) Create engaging content that people want to link to
Great content is king and creating great content will drive people to your site. Inbound SEO links (other sites linking to yours) is still one of the biggest influences for search engines. So, if your site is full of original and interesting content, you stand a far better chance of other sites linking to you, giving you better results.
2) Encourage editorial links
Editorial links can be very powerful in the SEO battle as they come from other publications in your niche or area of expertise. A backlink checker should tell you what all links you possess. The easiest way to get editorial links is to create engaging content (see point 1) that the sites will want to share with their readers. A lot of social media is talking about interesting articles. A lot of sites adopt this method as it cuts down on the time it would take for them to write the original content themselves.
2) Keyword research
Keyword research is the method used by SEO professionals to find and research actual search terms that people enter into search engines. There are many websites like Spamzilla which offer you the tools to expedite the keyword research. Keyword research is one of the most valuable and rewarding techniques of SEO, and ranking for the right keywords can make or break the success of your website. With keyword research you can predict changes in demand, respond to market conditions and produce the services and products that internet browsers (maybe put ‘customers’ ) are actually looking for.
3) Optimised and Interesting Page Titles
The page title tag is used by search engines to display a page in search results and can also be found at the top of your browser. Page titles tell search engines as well as human searchers what the page is all about. Google will only display between 50-60 characters in your title tag, so you should really keep them under 55 characters. You should also try to encourage people to click the title by making them interesting or engaging. Keywords or page topics should also appear near the start of the title tag.
4) Focus Each Page Around a Single Keyword or Topic
It is important to optimize each of your website pages around a single idea or keyword. Keywords should be used for important page components such as page title, heading, image alt text (image description) and naturally throughout the page text. It is important to create each of these items for human readers as well as search engines.
5) URL’s Should be Short, Descriptive and Help to Categorise Your Site
The URL is one of the first things a search engine uses to determine page rank, which is why it is essential for you to make the URL easy for search engines to crawl. You can do this by keeping the URL short, by aligning it to the page topic and keyword, and by ensuring that the URL helps you to categorise your site pages.
6) Create Proper Heading Tags
Heading tags should tell the reader and the search engine what the page is about. Headings can also tell the search engine the importance of the content by using <H2> (Heading 2) and <H3> (Heading 3) tags. It is advisable not to use generic terms like “Home” or “Products” as these aren’t descriptive enough. Also, it is wise not to have essential information that would likely be your main heading as an image.
7) Don’t Ignore Social Media
If you search for your company on a variety of browsers in different locations do your social media pages come up in the search? (Think Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, etc). Your website should come up first in the search, but closely following should be your social media channels brimming with up-to-date content and an engaged community. With this scenario, if the reader doesn’t click your webpage, at least they are driven to your brand which is a very valuable positioning technique. Also if you’ve let the company Google+ page out in the digital wilderness to die, consider reintroducing it to the daily posting plan. Google+ is after all Google’s social network baby and will get always preferential treatment in Google searches.
8) Mobile SEO
Mobile platforms (smart phones and tablets) accounted to roughly 60% of total digital media time spent according to comScore in May 2015. Therefore, mobile SEO should be part of every strategy for SEO in 2015, but it must be done cautiously as configuration errors can cause loss of traffic.
9) Everyone Will be Doing SEO
If you’re not already doing SEO, you should really think about starting today or you’re likely to get left behind. SEO is one of the biggest subjects in website design and creation and more and more businesses getting on the SEO bandwagon, if you’re not doing it, you will fall further and further back in internet searches and further behind your competitors. Thankfully it’s not difficult or expensive to make changes to really improve your search engine positioning.
10) Track progress and update
Tracking your results and updating your site is essential. You must be able to see what results come from the changes you’re making and analysing the results will enable you to make better choices in the next update. By regularly analysing your rankings via a rank tracker and your Google Analytics, you will be able to keep ahead of any issues and ensure that you’re taking advantage of all new opportunities in 2015.
*Do we need to mention the difference between organic and PPC? Organic can help rankings long term and FREE, PPC can help introduce people to the website in bulk and quickly but once the advertisement has finished so is your ability to keep visitors coming and that’s why organic SEO is important.
